Meet Tabo Bo, a Young Scholars LPP 2018 Alum!

Tabo’s journey with Young Scholars LPP began in Elementary School when he was nominated by his elementary school teacher. Bo says, “My teacher believed the program would help a lot for my future career!” The Young Scholars program has made a significant impact on Tabo’s life. Tabo says that the program has shaped his life in and out of the classroom and taught him important lessons, such as the significance of community involvement.

When discussing some of Tabo’s favorite activities/programs that he participated in during his time with YSLPP, the Summer Program was at the top of his list! The Young Scholars LPP Summer Program is a three-week program to help prepare students for the rigors of middle school and high school coursework. All core classes are taught by NYS-certified teachers, many of whom come from our very own Utica City School District! Tabo mentions that his favorite part of the Summer Program was “meeting new people!”

After graduating from the program in 2018 with his Advanced Regents Diploma and obtaining the Utica Promise, Tabo went on to obtain his Bachelor of Science degree in Cybersecurity Network Forensics and Intrusion Investigation at Utica University! Bo graduated from Utica University in 2022 and is now living in Philadelphia with a career as a Cybersecurity Engineer for Chubb, an insurance company.

Tabo is also the creative director and founder of Nomadic Voices! Bo says, “Nomadic Voices is a showcase for creative arts of all kinds. We gather in parks and public spaces and host open mic nights that are powerful. Building connection and community through personal and cultural expression, we host events where everyone’s voice matters. We are artists and activists. We sing, dance, play music, tell stories, recite slam poetry, perform comedy, and more! Anyone and everyone can be a part of the Movement!” Bo has hosted several very successful events right here in the Utica community!

When discussing what he is most proud of, Bo says, “I’m most proud of my heritage and where I come from, as a Karen refugee and a Utica Native.” Tabo has made such an amazing impact in the Utica community and will continue to shine wherever he goes! His advice for current Young Scholars is “to be involved!” He says, “get out there and be involved in the community, make friends, and be yourself.”

We are so proud of Tabo, and look forward to following him on his journey as a Young Scholars professional!
